Newton's Prism, 2011, Timber, Perspex, Resin, Audio
donna davis

This work is currently exhibited at Drawing Point Gallery, in the Curious Colours exhibition.

The work references Isaac Newton's discovery when observing a beam of sunlight through a prism which revealed a 7th colour in the optical spectrum. His discovery was realised through visual perception. This got me thinking about the colours of the rainbow and how you could explain these colours to someone who has never seen colour.

The resin element of the work explains colour as text, listing the colours of the rainbow in braille whilst the audio component seeks to explain colour in an emotive context, reflecting on feelings often associated with colour. I was basically trying to explore colour beyond the visual experience.

Exhibition runs from 1 - 31 December, 2011.
